Where to Eat in the Houston Heights: Part 1

Wednesday, November 13

Houston, Texas is an up-and-coming food scene. This city loves to eat – and there are plenty of options! Tex-Mex, BBQ, Korean, Italian, Steaks….and did I mention Tex-Mex. Luckily some of our favorite restaurants are located right around the corner from us in the Houston Heights. I’ve listed 10 here today but this is just the tip of the iceberg. I plan to do another round-up in a few weeks with another round of 10 names so feel free to let me know which ones you love!

  1. Zelko Bistro: If I had to sum up the Heights restaurant scene, it’s places like Zelko Bistro – local food, casual ambience and amazing dishes. Do not go without ordering the Captains Chicken and the fried pickles or parmesan fries as a side. This place gets crowded so bring your patience and be prepared to grab a drink at the bar.
  1. Chiloso’s Taco House: Houston has its fair share of taco places, but we are particularly in love with Chilosos for their breakfast variations. It is so popular amongst the locals that there is usually a line out the door on Saturday mornings. Order: the egg and chorizo taco!
  1. Vietnam Restaurant: On a weekday night when I don’t want to cook we like to head to Vietnam for dinner. It is BYOB too so we’ll bring a bottle of wine to split. Get the wonton soup (seriously THE BEST) and Vietnamese beef….you won’t be disappointed.
  1. Down House: Down House is my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. Their cocktails are always spot on and creative which I really appreciate. J I’m obsessed with their weekend brunch but the food is always consistent no matter what time of day it is.
  1. Gatlin’s BBQ: If you are a BBQ fan, get ready to be amazed. This place is always packed so get there before 11am if you can {they usually sell out}. The whole menu is incredible but I’m a sucker for the brisket.
  1. Glass Wall: Glass Wall is a tried and true Heights classic and was among the first restaurants to break into our restaurant scene. The food can be hit or miss but we really appreciate the “fancier” atmosphere when we are looking to dress up and grab a martini.
  1. Yale Street Grill: This place is a hidden gem. A little bit off the hustle and bustle of the other places listed, they serve up AMAZING breakfast food. Go on a Saturday morning for pancakes & eggs, a piping hot cup of coffee and don’t forget your newspaper.
  1. Revival Market: Oooh how we love this spot. Such a fun atmosphere! They specialize as a butcher/specialty food store but also serve up amazing sammies, coffee and a rotating menu of breakfast favorites.
  1. Teotihuacan: Living in Texas will make you a complete Tex-Mex snob. We are spoiled with many amazing choices and everyone has their favorite. For a cheap, authentic and delicious Mexican meal, Teotihuacan is our go-to. The ambiance leaves a little bit to be desired but you can’t beat the greasy enchilada and taco combo plate for $8.
  1. Liberty Kitchen: This place takes the cake for the most interesting menu. They serve everything from caviar to mac n cheese to fish tacos. We love to grab oysters and champagne here during Gulf Coast season. As an added bonus, the bar is always packed with young and lively folks.
