So this is the post where my sappiness may get insulting. You've been warned. See, I have been living in Houston for five years. FIVE. I know! I still can't get over it myself. Just yesterday, as I was swerving around another pothole, blasting the AC and listening to a country radio station (yes, COUNTRY. MUSIC.) it suddenly became apparent how much I have changed since moving here. Not in a weird cultish way...but in a genuine, real life way.
This humid, football crazed, tex mex loving, busy city has shaped me. For the better? I'd venture a yes...but you can ask my husband for the real answer ;)
People always ask me questions like: why I ended up here? how I like it here? if I plan on being here long? Which come to think of it, is soooo Texas of them. Side note: But gosh darn it when are they going to stop asking it in a way that makes me feel like a visitor or a tourist. Do I have to wait 10 years for that privilege? Or just be able to keep up conversation about UT football? Or maybe I need to start carrying a gun? I'll let you know when I figure out the secret.
But back to the matter at hand, Houston! Let me count the things I love about you: I love that I can walk into a bar and always find someone in a cowboy hat. And on that note, I love that chivalry still exists here. I love the weather from October through May. But especially in February when its cold and dreary everywhere else and you are sunny & balmy. I love that we don't have state tax (you know, the important things). And I love that it is perfectly acceptable (even encouraged) to get Tex Mex and margaritas twice a week. I love that you are a big city that seems so small. And that everyone knows everyone or is related to everyone in some way (that's taught me a thing or two about gossiping). I love that football is life. And that Austin is only a 2 hour drive away. I love that "y'all" is a thing here. I also love the restaurants...because, duh! I love rodeo season and pretending that all of us city folks are really country folks at heart. And I love those fried oreos...but mostly just the adorable cows. I love the amazing, good, kind friends that I have met here. Come to think of it, the people here are what I love most about this city.
You know, the weirdest thing about looking back over the last five years is the way things go by in a blink of an eye and you don't even notice yourself changing until one day it hits you like a ton of bricks. I guess that's the crazy thing about life. Or maybe just your twenties. But either way, I have to say that I'm really enjoying the ride. And I'm so thankful that I ended up in the great state of Texas.
So here's to Houston. My little love note.
